Mass screening at 157 Maharashtra hospitals finds 313 retinopathy cases among diabetics

The Maharashtra Ophthalmological Society conducted a mass screening for retinopathy among diabetic patients across the state, revealing 313 cases of the eye disease affecting the retina. Over a two-week period in November of the previous year, nearly 2,000 diabetic patients underwent screening, with 16.10% or 313 individuals identified as novel cases of diabetes retinopathy. The screening aimed to reach diverse socio-economic classes, emphasizing the prevalence of diabetes beyond affluent demographics. Dr. Vardhaman Kankariya, the chairman of the scientific committee, highlighted the need for widespread screenings, especially in rural areas. Dr. Santosh Agrawal, the society's president, emphasized that 16% of the screened diabetic patients were unaware of their retinopathy condition, emphasizing the importance of eye care in diabetes management. Ophthalmologists stressed that maintaining balanced sugar levels is crucial for preventing complications in the vulnerable eyes.
