70k govt staffers in dist extend support to demand for OPS

Nearly 70,000 government employees in Pune joined a state-wide strike demanding the restoration of the old pension scheme (OPS). The strike, called off after Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured that the issue will be taken up in the next budget session, had the support of 17 lakh employees from 35 unions. The OPS, discontinued in 2005, provided government employees with a monthly pension equivalent to 50% of their last drawn salary without any employee contributions.
