Drug kingpin Lalit Patil case: Sassoon hospital dean removed from post, senior doctor suspended

The Maharashtra government has removed Dr. Sanjiv Thakur from his position as dean of Sassoon General Hospital pending a departmental inquiry, and has suspended Dr. Pravin Deokate, head of the orthopaedic department, over negligence in allowing drug kingpin Lalit Patil to run a racket from the hospital's prisoner's ward and escape. The government's action follows a decision by the Bombay High Court to vacate an interim stay in favor of Dr. Thakur. The Department of Medical Education and Research will now appoint a committee to carry out a departmental inquiry into the incident.
