Activists demand proper upkeep of high-rise tanks

Residents of Kolhapur, India have been complaining about the condition of highrise tanks that were built to store filtered water and supply it nearby at adequate pressure. Activists recently inspected a tank in Kawala Naka - the largest of Kolhapur's 28 highrise tanks - and found that a large portion of the roof had collapsed. The tank has most likely been open to the elements for several months or even years. The activists said that they are raising the issue of cleaning the tanks for years now, but were unaware that the structures were also dilapidated. They found the roof collapsed while using a drone camera. The areas that depend on the tank have been receiving low pressure water supply for several months now. Activists had earlier taken officials to task for sludge of sediments inside tanks. "A huge sum of money is already spent on filtration such a collapse and the resultant choking of pipes puts additional financial strain at the cost of poor supply," sheikh added. "We demand the liability for such things should be fixed at the earliest."
